RESOLUTIONS of 16 Zimbabwean Political Parties ‘CODE and NERA’ members, in Cape Town, South Africa Monday 8 to 9 May 2017

In a historic move sixteen (16) Zimbabwean Political parties the bulk of whom are CODE and NERA members, met in Cape Town, South Africa from the Monday 8 to 9 May 2017 and committed to do all that is necessary to building a broad coalition of political parties to contest the elections from a unified and solid position. All but two political parties signed the resolution as the two parties wanted to consult their structures.

“The parties committed to reach out to other leaders from different sectors in our nation as the Crisis in Zimbabwe demands that we put aside our differences and work together to save our Country” says the Chairperson of the Gathering Dr. Dumiso Dabengwa.

Specifically the 16 parties committed to building a mass opposition movement (MOM) which is going to be guided by inclusivity, trust and ownership as the parties gear under one message in preparation for the elections in 2018.

“We recognize the need to build inclusivity, trust and ownership and it is our hope that we will reach out to the masses of Zimbabwe to come together to fight the elections as one unified voice echoing shared vision as we build the Zimbabwe we want”, said the Chairman Dr. Dabengwa.

According to the Chairman the next step in this pivotal move would be consultative forums with various multi stakeholders representing diverse groups and institutions across Zimbabwe.

“We recognize that the masses of Zimbabweans are fighting the same battle in their different platforms, however to win this battle we need to come together as one”, he explained.

Zimbabwe is currently embattled with a despotic government which has been in power for the last 37 years, and a plethora of crises which have brought Zimbabweans to their knees. This has caused many voices to rise up to respond to the crises albeit in a fragmented manner.

“Through this initiative we will be working together in achieving the establishment of a democratic, peaceful, sustainable Zimbabwe where every citizen lives a happy, fulfilled and prosperous life and to deliver transformational leadership to the people of Zimbabwe through a lean, competent and effective government”, enunciated the Chairman.

The mandate of the MOM is to bring Zimbabweans together under one vision and one voice to reclaim their country by putting its destiny in their hands by putting in place a winning team for the 2018 elections.

According the Chairman the vision of the Mass Opposition Movement (MOM) will be achieved through:

1. Working together as political parties and other stakeholders in addressing the Zimbabwean crisis including Zimbabweans in the diaspora and in particular the challenges of leadership, governance, rule of law and economic collapse.

2. Working together in a broad coalition of opposition parties and stakeholders with a view to contesting elections as a united opposition and in particular the principle of fielding one candidate for every elected position.

3. Engaging the international and regional community including SADC, AU and UN in the achievement of the above objectives.

Dr. Dabengwa concluded by saying the consultative meetings and related activities were part of the road map towards the establishment of a strong Mass Opposition Movement.
